A man from Herefordshire has called on men to speak up if they need someone to talk to for their mental health.

As the world celebrates International Men's Day on Sunday (November 19th), the crisis for men's mental health continues to worsen.

New research has revealed that while there is progress being made to break the stigma, men continue to prioritise other things other than their mental wellbeing.

Figures have now revealed that half of counsellors in the UK have seen an increase in the number of men seeking support, which helps to alleviate stress and anxiety.

Ash Winters is a retired veteran now basing himself in Herefordshire, and whilst speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, admitted that seeking therapy following his time in the army drastically helped him.

"When I left the military, I turned into a bit of an introvert. I really wasn't getting on well with my job; I was really, really low - completely rock bottom," he said.

"But by having that person to speak to was just key to my recovery, my survival if you like. It also meant I could move forward positively in my life."

Winters added that events such as International Men's Day help to bolster support for men looking after their mental health, adding that those struggling should not shy away from seeking support.

"I think International Men's Day is a wonderful thing and it's so important to try and get that message out there - that men can speak out.

"There are other people there to support them - and whether that works for them or not - it doesn't matter. As long as they speak out to somebody."

Dan Reid, also based in the county, has set up a walking group so that men who are in need of someone to speak to, can do so now.

He added that it is incredibly important for those who are struggling are allowed to feel the way they feel: "It's okay not to be okay".
