Four boys died by drowning after falling into icy water in Solihull, inquest hears

Samuel and Finlay Butler, Thomas Stewart, and Jack Johnson fell into a lake at Babbs Mill park in December.

An inquest into the death of four boys who fell in the lake at Babbs Mill Park in Solihull, has found that they died as a result of drowning having fallen through the ice into freezing water.

It happened in December 2022.

The boys include brothers - six-year-old Samuel and eight-year-old Finlay Butler - their cousin, Thomas Stewart, 11, and Jack Johnson, 10.

After the incident, the family of Samuel, Finlay, and Thomas said: “As a family we are devastated at the loss of our beautiful boys Tom, Fin and Sam in such tragic circumstances. We would like to thank the emergency services for all they did in rescuing the boys and to the community for their support, it has been overwhelming.

“We would like to pass on our condolences to Jack’s family at this very sad time, and ask for privacy from the media to begin to grieve.”

A vigils took place after the incident where hundreds of people gathered by the lake to remember the boys.
