Formula One cancels Russian Grand Prix over Ukraine invasion
The race was due to take place in September
Organisers at Formula One have chosen to cancel the Russian Grand Prix, due to be held in Sochi in September.
The decision by Formula One's governing body was taken following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Thursday (February 24th).
As a result, it is unknown whether the race will be replaced. However, there is speculation that the Grand Prix could move to Turkey's Istanbul Park on September 25th.
In a statement, Formula One expressed their dismay at Russia's actions, saying it goes against the spirit of the sport.
"The FIA Formula One World Championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together. We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation," they said.
"On Thursday evening Formula One, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances."
International organisations have been under fire to expel Russia following its military intervention in neighbouring Ukraine.
The announcement by Formula One came only two hours after UEFA said it would move the final of the Champions League in opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Russian military forces entered the country on Thursday morning with sporadic shelling and bombing across Ukraine's major cities - including the capital, Kyiv.
In a recorded statement, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK would 'not look away' from the war and offer support to Ukraine however they could.
