Eight people have been arrested - after a police car was torches and objects like glass bottles were thrown at officers in Hartlepool.

Several officers suffered injuries following the disorder, which they believe is in response to Monday's knife attack in Southport.

Roads were cordoned off, but have since reopened.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said:

"We understand that these events will have been hugely concerning to our communities and we want to reassure people that the actions of those involved will be dealt with to bring those responsible to justice.

In the meantime there will remain a visible police presence in the area.
