Met Police make over 50 arrests following Champions League final
The arrests were made after Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that over 50 people were arrested during the Champions League final at Wembley.
Officers said that a total of 53 people were detained by the force, with five being arrested for invading the pitch after Real Madrid emerged victorious over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night (June 1st).
A number of other arrests were made before the match as many tried to enter the arena in North West London without a ticket.
In a statement released on their X account, the Met Police said they were "confident that the overwhelming majority of attempts to unlawfully gain access to Wembley were unsuccessful", thanks to help from officers and arena staff.
As well as this, the force said there was a "robust policing operation" in place across the stadium, with multiple levels of security to stop those who did not have a ticket from getting in.
This came amid videos being shared on social media that appeared to show invalid ticket holders running into the arena through security.
The force said that a strong police presence remains in the area to deal with any potential crimes in the wake of the match.
Real Madrid came out on top in a thrilling match against Borussia Dortmund to lift the Champions League trophy.
UEFA, the governing body of the Champions League, capped the maximum attendance to the event at 86,600, just shy of the stadium's full 90,000 capacity.
The reasoning for the cap was to allow adequate segregation between rival fans during the match to minimise potential security issues.
Both Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund were given 25,000 tickets each to sell, with the remainder being put on general sale, as well as for corporate guests.
