A recruitment drive is underway to build a team of ‘street angels’ which will provide care for vulnerable revellers in Stockton.

Around 20 volunteers will be required to patrol the town centre on a Saturday night providing support for people in need and helping resolve issues before emergency services step in.

The initiative is being funded by a £6,000 grant from the Cleveland Unit for the Reduction of Violence or CURV – as part of their work to develop a long-term multi-agency approach to tackle serious violence.

A further £6,000 of match funding has been provided by Stockton Business Improvement District (BID), which manager Jason Maxwell says shows “commitment to fostering a safer and more supportive” community in the town.

He said: “The establishment of Stockton Street Angels marks a significant step in our broader strategy to enhance safety and well-being through impactful initiatives in collaboration with key partners like the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland (OPCC).

“This match funding not only amplifies our financial commitment but also highlights our resolve to work alongside businesses and local authorities to create a positive change, making Stockton a safer place for everyone.”

Stockton Street Angels will hand out flip flops, water, blankets, and other necessities to anyone that needs care after a night out.

They will be First Aid trained and ready to offer a listening ear or company until professional help arrives.

They will also be easily identifiable in branded uniform and full training will be provided.

Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey met with Mr Maxwell and his team of trustees in Stockton town centre where the volunteers will be based.

He said: “It’s fantastic for me to hear how Stockton Angels will be committed to enhancing the safety and security of Stockton’s night-time environment by providing proactive support and care for those who may be vulnerable.

“As Police and Crime Commissioner I want every individual to feel safe and secure while visiting Stockton, and the efforts from the Street Angels will go some way to help with that.”
