A Middlesbrough resident has been fined for dumping a double mattress in the back alley behind her home.

Samantha O’Kane, of Harford Street, Newport, was charged with “depositing without an environmental permit” after being caught on CCTV.

The 36 year-old admitted the offence but did not identify a male accomplice who was also caught on camera. She was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, which she failed to pay.

On September 17, O’Kane appeared before Teesside Magistrates’ Court where she received a fine of £120 and was ordered to pay £349 in costs – a bill totalling £469.

Middlesbrough Council urged residents to dispose of waste legally and responsibly and reminded people to book online to dispose of large items at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Haverton Hill, where there is no charge for residents. Fees do apply for businesses.

Labour Councillor Janet Thompson, executive member for Community Safety, said: “The message really should be getting through now that fly-tipping just isn’t worth it. Not only is it a selfish blight on the local neighbourhood and an insult to law- abiding residents, but it can leave those responsible seriously out of pocket and with the stain of a criminal record.

“This is another great result, and we will continue to use all methods at our disposal to stamp out this menace.”
