Police say they will be out on the streets this weekend across Teesside as part of a response to planned protests across the country.

It follows heightened tensions nationally following the stabbings in Southport earlier this week including in Hartlepool.

Mark Webster, Chief Constable of Cleveland Police, said: "What I'd say is that if you're an elected representative, a councillor or an MP, you've got a role in that because the police can deal with the crime and we will deal with the crime. What I'd say is that there were no indications of particular community tension, this clearly has been influenced by events outside of Hartlepool so this isn't something that's Hartlepool specific.

"This isn't Hartlepool. Officers who've worked here for two to three decades have never seen anything like this, and they don't want to see anything like this. Our part is making sure we don't allow any further behaviour like this to happen.

"What we're trying to make sure at the moment is that we can all help support each other out with specialist skills and resources, so whilst forces will support us equally we'll support others as well if they need that help, and there's a central coordination function that does that for us."

Matt Storey, Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "We want to make sure that the resources are provided to make sure that if there are issues like this in future that we're prepared, we saw what the police did in Hartlepool and I think they're incredibly brave. I think it was a fine example of Cleveland Police doing what needs to be done in a very dangerous situation.

"The best way for the community to bounce back is for them to show solidarity with each other. This doesn't represent Hartlepool. I know what Hartlepool is like and I know the communities of Hartlepool are not represented by these people. This disorder doesn't show Hartlepool at all. This is a group of people who are exploiting a tragic situation for their own ends."
