University of Suffolk praised for its research in national review
Suffolk's university was highly commended for producing research that has a real-world impact
The University of Suffolk has been praised for the quality of its research as part of a national review into the work being produced in higher education across the UK.
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is carried out every few years.
It involves UK universities submitting some of their best work to be assessed for its 'real world' impact.
It is intended to make sure public money put towards research projects at UK unis is well spent and is producing benefits for the wider public.
The University of Suffolk, which only became independent in 2016, made its first ever submission last year.
12% of their research was rated 4* - or 'world leading' in terms of its quality.
56% was given the 3* rating, meaning it is considered to have 'considerable impact' in terms of its significance.
The university says it provides a 'firm foundation' for future development. ÂŁ1m has been spent since last year to aid future research.
Professor Helen Langton, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Suffolk said:
“We are delighted with the outcome of REF 2021. These excellent results evidence the University’s efforts to deliver on its vision of transforming lives locally, nationally and globally and the impact of our research is vital to our success in meeting that goal.
"Our rapidly growing trajectory of attracting research funding and our developing reputation for outstanding research in line with our research specialisms are reflected in these results which provide significant assurance of our future position as an internationally recognised, high quality research institution.
The impact of our research is clear, benefiting society and the communities we serve with almost 70% per cent of our submissions achieving a rating of world-leading and international excellence."
Approximately 10,000 students attend the University of Suffolk in Ipswich.
It's hoping to have a new ÂŁ13m Health and Wellbeing Building open later this year.
