Secretary of State Therese Coffey urges greater support for ParalympicsGB

The MP for Suffolk Coastal will be the UK Government's ambassador to the games.

The British Paralympic games contingent will have at least one fan cheering from the stands, as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Therese Coffey will be representing the British Government as an ambassador in Tokyo.

Suffolk Coastal MP Dr Coffey, who's office is also in-charge of the affairs of disabled persons, spoke to us ahead of her flight to Tokyo.

She says: "I'm so excited and looking forward to supporting our inspirational athletes who are role models to people across ages".

"They remind us everything is possible, by overcoming their own disabilities and showing us that nothing is impossibly."

She also encouraged fans to show their appreciation for their these athletes online, and support them from afar.

"Athletes would love to get on social media and see the backing for the team", she says before adding that she is delighted to be able to show her support for them in Tokyo.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games begins today and will end in 5th September.

Who are Suffolk's athletes?

Among those from our county representing Paralympics GB in Tokyo are Zoe Newson, Evie Edwards and Jordan Catchpole.

Zoe, who was born in Ipswich, will be competing in the powerlifting at the games.

Beccles' Jordan Catchpole will be hoping for success in the pool, as he competes in the Para Swimming.

And, Evie Edwards, from Ipswich, is taking part in Boccia.
