Suffolk Police honours murdered Met Police officer
Police forces are taking part in a virtual 10k run to raise money for the Ratana Foundation
Suffolk Police is taking part in a virtual 10k run in memory of Metropolitan Police officer, Matt Ratana, who was murdered last year.
The sergeant was shot in the chest as he was taking a suspect into custody in Croydon on 25 September.
In his honour, officers and staff completed courses from Suffolk Police Headquarters in Martlesham to Woodbridge Rugby Club, with some participants also running in their local community.
They completed it on 18 April and a second event is being held this Sunday (25 April).
Forces across the country are taking part in the Ratana 10k throughout this month to raise money for the Ratana Foundation, which aims to improve young people's life experience through rugby.
Sergeant Matt Ratana was a rugby player and coach at the East Grinstead Rugby Club, and the cause aims to support local training and invest in providing equipment and facilities in the UK, New Zealand and South Africa.
Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Kearton said:
"This is a tremendous cause that serves as a tribute to police officers who have tragically lost their lives on duty.
"Officers and staff who are taking part in the Ratana 10k will do so at their own place, some at staggered times, to raise awareness of the incredible work of the Ratana Foundation, which promotes wellbeing and inclusivity through sport.
"I would like to thank everyone who participated, and those preparing for Sunday’s event.
"We are very grateful to Woodbridge Rugby Club for allowing us to finish at the club where we will enjoy a celebratory drink in line with Covid regulations, and toast our fallen colleagues."
