Firefighters in Suffolk have been praised for their response to the pandemic.

While their normal day-to-day response hasn't changed, their way of working has had to adjust.

That includes the use of PPE, maintaining social distancing as much as possible, risk assessments and extra training.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has taken on additional roles since last March, helping other emergency services and joining the fight against Covid-19.

Temporary Station Commander for the south district, Mel Buck, said: "We've had some staff that have been out driving ambulances and working with test centres and setting them up. It's a different way of working for us.

"I think the fire service has stepped up to that challenge in a pretty amazing way."

"As a manager of the people I'm exceptionally proud of where we are and what we've done."

Mel admitted working throughout the pandemic has been a challenge at times, but the camaraderie of crews always helps.

He added: "There's an impact on mental health in any change in life. We're very tight at working as watchers, with support out there from Suffolk Fire and external agencies.

"We've recognised problems but we've dealt with them, we speak to each other openly. There's definitely been that worry and concern, but there's lots of support."

As we gradually ease our way out of restrictions, Mel is encouraging people to continue to stick to the rules and is looking forward to engaging with the community again.
