'State of the art' new waste treatment site planned near Ipswich
If it goes ahead the Great Blakenham site could process 24,000 tonnes of waste a year
A planning application has been submitted for a new state-of-the-art waste treatment facility.
It was submitted to Suffolk County Council on October 6 and could see a pyrolysis facility capable of processing 24,000 tonnes of waste every year.
Pyrolisis is a process in which waste material is heated up without combustion, incineration, or burning, producing a gas stream and residual char.
These can be used to produce electricity, hydrogen, and other materials such as carbon char, all of which have multiple uses.
The application, submitted by Hygreen Energy, would sit on Bramford Road, near Ipswich, to the south of Masons Landfill
It would take up just over three acres of a brownfield site already approved for waste management, and employ 18 people.
Although the application statement ensures no emissions would be produced, some concern has been raised.
James Curtis, a resident of Great Blakenham, wrote this ‘doesn’t seem possible as all waste has bi-products’.
