Southwold's Sausage Dog Walk to be scaled back after hitting 'red tape'
The event brought over 2,200 small dogs to the Suffolk seaside town last year
A popular event which brought over 2,200 sausage dogs to the Suffolk seaside town of Southwold last year is having to be scaled back, after hitting red tape.
Last year's Southwold Sausage Walk exceeded the expectations of organisers, going viral on social media and gaining TV coverage as far away as Australia.
However this year organisers say they've had to struggle with the stress of 'red tape' and may not have the cash for the right permits and licences for the event.
In a post on social media, event staff say: "with so much red tape and the current economic climate in mind, we have decided that, while this years walk will go ahead, it will unfortunately have to be a scaled back version - literally a ‘Southwold Sausage Walk’ without the bells and whistles."
"This will provisionally be held on Sunday 8th October, however we are still awaiting a permit from East Suffolk Council.
"We are so so sorry we can not put on one of our big events this year, as you’ve all witnessed they get bigger and better each year but sadly we do not have the funds behind us to hold an event like we had in 2022.
The team behind the event say they're facing: "increased demands from the council in terms or requirements and health and safety regulations".
Organisers are now looking ahead to 2024, with a much larger scale event in the pipeline.
We've approached East Suffolk Council for comment on this story.
