Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed people and businesses in Suffolk will be able to access financial help, to help deal with the impact of Storm Babet.

Authorities in Suffolk declared a 'major incident' last week as roads were inundated and several rivers burst their banks.

Debenham, Framlingham, Long Melford and Wickham Market were among communities badly hit by flooding.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service received around 1,500 calls on Friday, with many of the callouts to people trapped in their cars due to floodwater.

It's now been confirmed grants and tax relief will be offered to people in affected communities to help them get back on their feet.

In response to Central Suffolk and North Ipswich MP Dr Dan Poulter earlier, the Prime Minister said:

"Flooding is a devastating experience and I extend my symphathies to all those affected."

"Through the Flood Recovery Framework we are confirming additional financial support for those households and businesses most affected."

"This will include a £500 grant for households, Council Tax discounts and Business Rates Relief of up to 100% for three months; small and medium sized businesses will also be eligible for a £2,500 business recovery grant.

"Up to £5,000 (will be available) for flooded homes to make them more resilient.

"We recognise the heroic efforts of local councils like his and emergency responders everywhere, who have been working tirelessly in affected areas"

Work is ongoing to clear-up and assess the damage, with local councils urging people affected to get in touch.

Councillor Matthew Hicks, Suffolk County Council's leader, said:

"Suffolk communities were among the hardest hit in our region, so this additional Government financial support is very welcome.

“Councils in Suffolk are currently gathering details of precisely how many properties were damaged in the floods, but we know that this support is urgently needed and we will do everything in our power to get it out to home and business owners as soon as possible.

“Right now, we’re asking people whose properties were flooded to report it to us. The easiest way to do this is to search ‘Report a flood’ on www.suffolk.gov.uk.

“The full details of the scheme, who is eligible and how it will work are yet to be announced by the Government, but as soon as they are we will share them widely.”
