A critically endangered Bactrian camel calf has been born at Jimmy's Farm south of Ipswich.

Only around 1,000 of its kind are left in the wild. The species is distinctive for having two humps on its back rather than just one.

The calf was born to parents Alice and Arthur at the end of last month. Alice was in labour for around two and a half hours and initially refused to feed the calf, as she had an infection.

The baby was initially bottle fed before mum started to show more interest. Both are now said to be doing well at the wildlife part near Wherstead.

General Manager Stevie Sheppard said:

“It was a very worrying time at the start when Alice was in pain and we had to step in to feed the calf.

"I’m so glad Alice recovered quickly and stepped in to the role of Mum like a natural. It’s a joy to watch them play as a family when I drive into work!”
