Police given extra powers after knife attack in Ipswich
A teenager's been left needing hospital treatment
Police have temporarily been given extra stop and search powers after a teenager was attacked with a large knife in Ipswich.
Officers were called to reports of a male being assaulted at about 1.30pm on Monday 31st January, in the Barrack Lane area.
The 16 year-old victim was taken to hospital with a serious laceration to his shoulder.
He was with an acquaintance at the time of the incident who was unhurt.
Police say the suspect fled the scene on a bicycle in the direction of the town centre.
Extra patrols are being carried out to reassure communities and a Section 60 has been authorised - which gives police power to stop and search without reasonable grounds for a set period of time.
The order's in place in an area encompassing Anglesea Road and Fonnereau Road to the north, across to Grimwade Street to the East, along Key Street to Commercial Road and West End Road to the south, and Yarmouth Road and Chevallier Street to the West.
It lasts until 3.30pm this afternoon.
Police say while there is no perceived risk to the wider public, there is an increased risk of violence between parties either directly involved, or associated with the incident.
Enquiries are ongoing to find the suspect, with any witnesses urged to come forward.
