Felixstowe is to get a brand new seafront attraction in the form of a Ferris wheel, after plans were approved by councillors yesterday.

Planners at East Suffolk Council unanimously gave the go ahead to the new structure, which will be installed on top of a garden on the waterfront on Sea Road close to Mannings.

The wheel will stand approximately 35m or 115ft high, with 24 pods about to hold a total of around 140 people.

Construction will begin soon with the aim of opening the attraction next month.

It will be in place for six months before being dismantled. The site will then be restored to its original state.

As part of its appication A & P Designs wrote: "The town itself is reliant to an extent on its tourism industry and has not benefitted from the media exposure some East Coast seaside towns receive."

"Therefore the applicant with cooperation from the Local Tourism Board, are keen to increase the visibility of this very pretty, less commercialised, seaside resort, to take full advantage of the increasing popularity in staycations within the UK and therefore boost the local economy.

"It is felt that this attraction would provide a major focal point for visitors allowing viewpoints across the beach which was awarded a Blue Flag for the first time, and the mouth of the Orwell River and out over the Port and beyond."
