A new play area and commemorative woodland have been officially opened at Ipswich's Gippeswyk Park.

The new transport-themed play area is close to the Lupin Road entrance and includes a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, railway station with train, road, and car themed areas and a river with boat climber and zip wire.

It's inspired by the nearby railway station, as well as the River Orwell and local roads.

Meanwhile 520 small trees have been planted to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It's just the latest planting to take place in Ipswich to honour her late majesty, with a new avenue of around 70 saplings due to be planted at the Murray Road Recreation Ground this week.

Councillor Phil Smart, of Ipswich Borough Council, said:

“It is a privilege to be opening the second of many Play Area improvements in Ipswich as part of the Play Area Strategy, with others to follow as part of a dedicated programme.

“Gippeswyk Park now has a new, exciting, inclusive, and educational play-space for families with young children to enjoy. With vehicles and trains both visible from the park, transport is a great theme to educate the next generation in a fun and inspiring way.”
