Ipswich Borough Council is poised to approve a plan to provide extra help to current and former members of the armed forces in Suffolk.

The local authority has been reviewing the support it already provides to forces' members and has now decided to offer additional.

Under measures which could be approved next week, forces members and veterans would get a special version of the council's iCard, allowing all day gym access throughout the week, as well as entry to Crown Pools.

Those leaving the forces would also get additional help in finding new employment, including automatic shortlisting for council jobs if they meet certain criteria.

Councillor Alasdair Ross, the council's Armed Forces Champion, said:

"I would like to thank the councillors and officers who participated in this review. Our current and former service men and women deserve our recognition and support.

"I am pleased that we can play our part and enhance our support through these recommendations."
