New figures show East Anglia leading the way in electric vehicle sales
New EVs account for around a third of new vehicle sales in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire
New figures show parts of East Anglia are leading the way when it comes to sales of new electric vehicles.
As of February thus year electric cars and vans accounted for 28% of all new vehicles sold in the region including Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
In Essex, new EV sales now account for approximately 1 in 10 of new vehicles sold in the county.
The Anglia region as a whole is second only to Oxfordshire, in terms of the proportion of electric vehicle sales.
The figures come from New AutoMotive, an independent transport research group supporting the uptake of electric vehicles in the UK.
Nationally, it found electric vehicle sales increased from 7% in February 2021 to 18% in Feburary this year.
Tesla remains the most popular EV brand in the UK, accounting for approximately a quarter of new electric car registrations in February.
The next three most popular electric vehicle makers are Kia, Hyundai and Mercedes Benz - each accounting for between 8% and 9% of new EV registations last month.
Around 48% of new cars sold last month were petrol, 26% hybrid and 18% pure electric.
The new figures come amid calls in Norfolk for more to be done to rollout electric vehicle chargers across the county.
The Green Party in the county has called for more investment and has warned the county could be 'left behind' in the electric vehicle revolution.
In Essex, Braintree is home to the UK's first all electric car charging forecourt.
