A landscape gardener accused of attacking a man with an axe in a pub has denied attempted murder and is facing a trial next year.

David Perry, 39, allegedly struck Matthew Cutts, in his 30s, once with an axe in a bar area at The Bell Hotel in Market Hill, Clare, Suffolk on March 19.

Peter Gair, prosecuting, said Perry swung it down to the side of Mr Cutts's neck, causing a fractured skull.

The defendant, of St Margarets Place, Stradishall, Suffolk, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court on Wednesday where he denied the attempted murder of Mr Cutts.

He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, and to possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

Judge Martyn Levett remanded Perry in custody ahead of his scheduled trial from January 9 next year, which has a time estimate of five days.

The case is due back before the court for an administrative hearing on June 27.
