Suspected burglar charged after climbing onto roof in Ipswich

A 49-year-old man has been charged in relation to an incident in Ipswich which resulted in an area of the town centre being closed off.

Officers were called to Butter Market at approximately 4.35am yesterday, Thursday 16 May, to reports of a burglary in progress at Carat’s Jewellers after the alarm had been activated.

A further call reported that the male suspect had climbed onto the roof of the premises and was climbing over several other businesses.

A number of emergency services resources were deployed to the area, including police, negotiators, ambulance personnel and Suffolk Fire and Rescue, and surrounding roads were cordoned off for public safety.

After nine hours the situation was safely resolved, shortly before 1.40pm, and all road restrictions were lifted.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary and initially taken to hospital for assessment as a precaution. He was discharged from hospital yesterday evening and was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Daniel Coulson, of Woodbridge Road in Ipswich, has subsequently been charged with three offences in connection with the incident in the town centre yesterday (16 May) as follows:

  • Intentionally/recklessly cause a public nuisance;
  • Two counts of burglary other than a dwelling (relating to two business premises in Butter Market).

He was also charged with another count of burglary other than dwelling, relating to an incident at a business premises in Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, during the early hours of Thursday 9 May. Forced entry was gained to the building and a number of electrical items and car keys were stolen from inside and a car was then taken from outside.

Coulson has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, Saturday 18 May.
