Ipswich's famous woolly mammoth is to take centre stage as part of a major refurbishment project at Ipswich Museum.

'Wool-I-Am' is to get a gallery of his own thanks to a £110,000 from the Wolfson Foundation, a charity that supports science and the arts.

The new gallery will bring to life the pre-historic world in which the mammoth once lived, and will feature interactive exhibits and some of the artefacts found in the Stoke Tunnel; including tusks, teeth and bones.

In total, £8.7m is being spent on major refurbishment work at Ipswich Museum.

Councillor Carole Jones, of Ipswich Borough Council, said:

“We are delighted to receive this support from the Wolfson Foundation.

"As well as providing an impressive backdrop for Wool-I-Am, this new gallery will look in detail at the human story and the long-term impact early modern humans had on other species, our environments and the planet.

"We are really looking forward to working with the people of Ipswich and our funding partners to inspire a new generation through the new stories we tell within Ipswich Museum.”
