Plans have been submitted to make Ipswich's Environment Agency offices greener.

The plans, which have been given to Ipswich Borough Council, are for the installation of five commercial air source heat pumps (ASHPs) at Iceni House in Cobham Road, where Environment Agency offices are based.

Proposed by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the pumps are part of a wider decarbonisation project aiming to retrofit existing buildings with sustainable and renewable energy sources.

The planning report says: “The proposed development will provide a new sustainable renewable energy source which will contribute towards diversity and security of supply and reduce harmful emissions to the environment.”

The proposals follow the April 2022 approval for the installation of solar panels on the building’s roof.

The report also ensures the new 70 square-metre compound to be built to house the pumps will now affect the character of the area by being situated behind an existing two-metre high brick wall leading from the security gates.
