The ambulance service which covers Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex is to help the NHS to donate fleet of ambulances to Ukraine.

Since the start of the Russian invasion thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been hurt or killed in the fighting, although doctors have continued to offer livesaving care amidst the war.

A total of 20 ambulances will be donated to Ukrainian health services by the NHS. Four of those will come from the East of England Ambulance Service.

Doctors have continued to work across Ukraine, despite the risk of Russian shelling and airstrikes

The donations will help replace ambulances damaged or destroyed in Russian attacks. The first will arrive in the western city of Lviv this week.

From there they will be driven to the towns and cities most in need.

Marcus Bailey, chief operating officer at EEAST, said:

“The thoughts and solidarity of everyone at EEAST are with the people of Ukraine and those in our community who have friends and family who have been affected by these awful events.

“We are reminding all of our staff of the wellbeing support that is available through the Trust, as well as safe ways they can donate if they wish to.

“NHS England is coordinating requests made by the Ukrainian government to make sure the support the NHS provides can be delivered quickly. We are liaising closely with them and are ready to provide support when it is required."
