A man's appeared in court charged with murder following the death of another man in Sutton Heath.

42 year old Jay Cotterill, of Ipswich Avenue in Sutton Heath, appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court court this morning.

He's due in Crown Court later this afternoon.

What happened?

It's after police were called at just before 9pm on Sunday 8 October, to reports of a stabbing outside a property in Ipswich Avenue.

Officers arrived at the scene within 15 minutes, followed shortly afterwards by ambulance crews.

An air ambulance also attended, along with a volunteer critical care paramedic from the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, but the victim – a 37-year-old man - died at the scene.

A Home Office post-mortem examination was conducted on Monday 9 October, and concluded that the cause of death was stab wounds to the heart and left lung.

Police tell us formal identification procedures of the deceased have yet to take place.

Cotterill was arrested at the scene at just after 9.15pm on Sunday night and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

He was subsequently charged with murder.

He has also been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, in connection with an assault on a woman that is also reported to have occurred during the incident on Sunday night.

A section of Ipswich Avenue had been closed from the junction with Easton Road for police enquiries to take place, but this has now reopened.
