Thousands of people in Ipswich could have their council tax bills cut to zero under a new plan set to be discussed this week.

Ipswich Borough Councillors are set to talk through changes to the Local Council Tax Reduction (Working Age) scheme at a meeting tomorrow.

The scheme was introduced in 2018 to help people on low incomes across the town.

Changes will include an increase to the maximum Council Tax Reduction available - meaning over 7,500 local households will no longer have to pay anything.

A total of 10,406 households across Ipswich would have thier bills cut by £75 from April, if the changes to the scheme are approved.

Councillor Bryony Rudkin, of Ipswich Borough Council, said:

“During the cost-of-living crisis that is facing us all, it is important for us as a Council to do all we can to help those who need it most in our town.

Improvements to the Council Tax Reduction Scheme for 2023/24 will go a long way to provide clearer support with council tax bills for our financially vulnerable working age residents.”
