Ipswich Borough Council is opening the town centre to motorists between 6pm and 9pm this evening, 13th December, so people can see the Christmas decorations.

The event has received a large amount of interest since it was announced during the week, which has led the council agreeing to hold it for a second time on Sunday 20th December.

It's the first time in 27 years that all members of the public will be able to enjoy the scheme, which is usually held for Blue Badge holders.

Drivers will be able to enter the pedestrianised town centre at Major's Corner and drive along Carr Street, Tavern Street and Westgate Street, before leaving at Museum Street.

Motorists will have to stick to a 5mph speed limit and will not be allowed to stop.

Speaking when the first event was announced, Councillor Sarah Barber, Portfolio Holder for the Town Centre, said: "This year has been a really challenging time for everyone, and we are so pleased to be able to bring some festive cheer to people in the run up to Christmas.

"Please remember to stay in your car and keep moving to ensure that everyone gets a chance to see the Christmas lights."
