"Hi-tech" bins being trialled in East Suffolk
They aim to reduce rubbish and prevent wasted journeys
New "hi-tech" bins are being trialled in East Suffolk to keep the district as tidy as possible.
Across the area, 18 bins have been fitted with sensors which will alert the council when they need to be emptied.
The aim of the trial is to reduce rubbish in the district and prevent wasted trips to bins which do not need emptying, supporting the authority's environmental commitment.
Councillor James Mallinder, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:
"East Suffolk Council is committed to keeping our environment litter-free and this is just another example of our efforts to make East Suffolk a better and more beautiful place to live, work and visit.
"These bin sensors enable our teams to make better decisions on when a bin needs to be emptied, meaning they can reduce unnecessary journeys that have a negative impact on our environment, and improve collection efficiency."
The trial is part of Smarter Suffolk, a project led by Suffolk County Council in partnership with the University of Suffolk, to tests bin sensors' effectiveness across the county.
