Almost 600 trees to be planted in Ipswich in honour of Queen Elizabeth II
Trees will be planted at Gippeswyk Park and the Murray Road Recreation Ground
Almost 600 trees are to be planted across Ipswich in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabth II.
590 saplings have been donated to the town through the The Queen’s Green Canopy, which was launched to plant millions of trees across the country to mark the Jubilee year.
A small area of trees has already been planted in Holywells Park, with around 520 saplings due to go in at Gippeswyk Park during February half-term.
An avenue of 70 large trees will also be planted at the Murray Road Recreation Ground, made up of Wild Cherry, Lime, Horse Chestnut, disease resistant Elm, Oak, Walnut, Copper Beech, and Rowan.
Money to fund the planting has come from the government, as well as The Queen’s Green Canopy scheme and Trees for Cities.
Councillor Philip Smart, of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “We feel honoured that Ipswich has been chosen to play a part in The Queen’s Green Canopy, creating a living legacy for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
These new trees strengthen our status as a tree city of the world, bringing a number of social and environmental benefits to the town and also contributing to our net zero ambitions by 2030.”
