Mae Muller reveals Sam Ryder's advice for her Eurovision performance
She's representing the UK with her song 'I Wrote A Song'
With the exciting news that Mae Muller will be representing the UK at this year's Eurovision Song Contest, we just had to get the 'Feels This Good' singer on Hits Radio.
Joining Fleur East, James Barr and producer Matt, Mae revealed the inspiration for her track called 'I Wrote A Song', and the advice last year's UK act Sam Ryder has given her.
What advice did Sam Ryder give Mae Muller?
Sam Ryder was last year's UK Eurovision act and wowed the audience with his performance of 'Space Man', scoring the UK the highest position in years with second place, so Fleur and the team wanted to know if he had given Mae any advice yet, and he has!
Mae revealed Sam had already sent her some messages and a voice note. "A couple of days ago he messaged me and said I just want to say big congratulations," she said.
"I was like ‘oh my gosh, thank you so much…' It’s actually really inspiring and nice to hear how positively everyone speaks about him too and it’s been really nice to be like around that energy.
"He replied and sent me like a one minute long voice note. And he just said, like the main thing is soak it all in and enjoy it. It’s such an amazing experience just really try and enjoy every step because it’s a wild ride, he basically said live in the moment, and I said thank you! Love you!"
What is 'I Wrote A Song' about?
Mae's Eurovision song is called 'I Wrote A Song' and is about heartbreak from previous relationships, but she admitted it wasn't about one person in particular.
"Obviously it’s from personal experiences but I kind of just wanted to write something that people could relate to," she explained. When asked if it was about one guy she said: "No, it’s just a bit here and there, you know? I just wanted to write about more the feeling like, you really hurt me you know... how do I turn this emotion into something more positive? How do I come out the other side?"
Watch the music video for 'I Wrote A Song':
'I Wrote A Song' was announced as the UK's Eurovision entry on Thursday 9th March, but Mae admitted she didn't write the song for the competition!
"I literally wrote it maybe a matter of days before the Eurovision conversations started," she explained. "But the second we started talking about it I was like 'oh my gosh', I really think that I’ve got this song which I really think would be perfect for Eurovision.
"And I’m kind of happy because if I was to write with Eurovision in mind I think I’d get a bit overwhelmed and I’d be like, 'oh god it has to be perfect' and it has to be this, but the fact that I just had it, it was fresh in my mind and I felt really excited, I kind of thought let’s see if they like it, they did!"
Good luck on 13th May at Eurovision Mae!
