United set to claw back ‘richest club’ title

Published 20th Jan 2016

Manchester United are being tipped to be the highest earning football club in the world next year, that’s despite coming third in figures released today.

‘The Money League’ is produced by financial analysts Deloitte and is the most contemporary and reliable analysis of the football clubs’ financial performances.

Figures are based on the previous season’s finances and, this year, are topped by Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona who are first and second respectively.

Despite United falling down one place from last year, it is predicted that the club could return to the top of the Money League in 2017, a feat they have not managed since 2004.

Tim Bridge, Senior Consultant at Deloitte said: “The return to Champions League football, as well as the commencement of a number of significant commercial partnerships, will only strengthen the business in 2015/16.

“With this in mind, it would not be surprising to see United top next year’s Money League.”

Rivals Manchester City are unmoved in 6th place, with 17 of the 20 Premier League clubs featuring in the top 30.

Bridge believes that this success is also down to new broadcasting deals for British clubs, adding: “Despite disappointing performances by Premier League clubs in recent European competitions, they continue to lead the way in revenue terms.’
