Former Manchester United player Nicky Butt has been appointed as the new head of the club’s academy. Butt was part of the famous ‘class of 92’ which also included David Beckham and current assistant manager Ryan Giggs.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says that ‘Nicky has the traditions and heritage of this club in his blood and he is the natural choice’ Woodward goes onto say that ‘as a graduate of its (the academy’s) finest team in the modern era, Nicky will bring passion, energy and experience to drive the academy forward’.
The former academy boss Brian McClair left united last June to become the Scottish Football Association’s performance director. McClair was in charge of the academy for 9 years. Butt's appointment comes after a reshuffle in the academy which saw Paul McGuiness leave his role as under-18s coach last week.
Previously Butt was working as the reserve team and under-19s coach. The 41-year-old says he’s looking forward to helping create the next generation of stars and believes “It's a privilege to take on this role”. Butt made 387 appearances for United, winning six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League. Sam Danson
