Bury 0 Bolton 2 - Wanderers move up to 2nd after derby clash
Clough brace sees Bolton win.
Two Zach Clough penalties gave Bolton a 2-0 win over Bury, their first league win at Gigg Lane for 87 years.
The spot-kicks won and scored by Clough, came during each half of the match. It was the North West rivals first meeting in 17 years, securing Bolton’s first win on Bury turf since 1929.
A fifth straight win for Wanderers lifts them to second place in League One, a far cry from last year’s campaign which witnessed them finish bottom of the Championship.
Parkinson was delighted to claim a win for Bolton fans who had made the short trip across the A58.
“I'm so pleased for all the Bolton fans that have come here over the years and not seen a victory; we've got one and we're sending them all home happy,”
“Bolton have come to Gigg Lane and maybe taken things lightly. Bury, it is their biggest game of the season, I knew that because I played here. I can see why it's been a tough place to come for Bolton but we've put that to bed.”
The Shakers fell behind in the first thirteen minutes after defender Niall Maher, who spent ten years with Clough in the Bolton academy, brought down his ex-teammate in the box. Eleven minutes into the second half another Clough penalty increased Bolton's advantage.
Bury boss David Flitcroft contested the referee’s decision on both occasions.
“If you're the Bolton manager you're probably saying 'Well done' to your player. A player going down too easy - it's a message I wouldn't really send out. It happened at the weekend and it's happened tonight.”
Parkinson was quick to highlight that referee decisions have cost his side vital points this season.
“We haven't had a pen all season; we're overdue something to go for us. In saying that we've had the best chances in the game.”
Bury now slip to eleventh place following a fifth consecutive league defeat.
