Sheffield supertram to face rail replacements beginning today
Service is expected to be disrupted for a week as works are carried out
Sheffield's Supertram network is set to be hit with disruption from today as works are carried out.
The engineering work begins on Saturday (May 25th) and is expected to last until June 3rd, in an attempt to modernise the tracks.
This is the first phase of renovations to the tram network, with further delays and disruption to be expected on other areas of the network over the summer.
According to the Supertram, the works are "critical" to ensuring the long-term future of the light rail network that extends across the city.
In a statement offered by the Supertram itself, they said: "The new rail will give passengers a better travel experience - improving comfort and reducing noise in areas where tracks are currently worn - as well as reducing the risk of closure of the network on safety grounds."
They also added: "Every effort has been made to minimise disruption but services will be impacted."
Disruption will be felt across every line of the service, with reduced frequencies and outright stop closures expected across the week.
Services on the Blue and Yellow Lines will only run between the University of Sheffield and Malin Bridge / Middlewood, with trams running ever 20 minutes during the day, as well as bypassing Nethertrope Road station to help with refurbishment.
A temporary Green line will help to ease pressures on people commuting to the city centre, with added services between Halfway and Sheffield Station, as well as another line connecting Hyde Park and the Meadowhall Interchange.
Services will have an average frequency of 12 minutes, and will allow for direct journeys between Halfway and the Meadowhall Interchange without needing to change trams.
