A Sheffield man has been jailed for five years after being caught in possession of a gun, live ammunition and a knife.

22 year old Awais Naveed threw a bag containing a converted blank firing pistol and several bullets onto a roof as he was being pursued by officers on August 1 2024.

Naveed, of Midhill Crescent, admitted to possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate, and possession of a knife in a public place.

He was sentenced last week at Sheffield Crown Court - with the weapons being destroyed by police.

Lois Bright, who was the officer in charge of the case, said: “This sentence is a reminder to all those who decide to carry a firearm or knife that we will pursue these offenders relentlessly and bring them before the courts.

“The firearm carried by Naveed was one of the now illegal blank firing pistols, dozens of which were handed over in a month-long amnesty in February.

“We know only too well in South Yorkshire the devastation that firearms and knives can cause.

“I am relieved that Naveed’s weapons have been destroyed and that he is safely behind bars where he cannot pose a risk to the public.”
