A Sheffield man has been jailed for 18 months for hitting and killing a pedestrian during a crash two years ago.

24 year old Charles Pickering, of Whirlow Croft, was behind the wheel of a blue VW Caddy van which, at 9:09pm on October 1 2022, collided with a pedestrian on Prince of Wales Road.

The 53 year old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pickering was interviewed at the scene, during which time time officers discovered he'd modified his vehicle with tinted windows.

It was thought he was going 60mph in a 40 zone at the time of the crash..

He was arrested on March 23 2023 and charged with causing death by careless driving, a charge he later admitted at Sheffield Magistrates' Court.

As well as his prison sentence, he's been handed a three year nine month driving ban.

PC Natalie Booler, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Because of Pickering’s carelessness, a woman has lost her life.

“Everyone should be safe on the roads of South Yorkshire, whether a pedestrian, driver, or other road user.

“The main attributing factors to serious and fatal collisions are speeding, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a phone whilst driving.

“The victim’s death in this tragic collision could have been avoided if Pickering had simply taken more care and followed the rules of the road.

“I am glad he has been taken off the streets - and roads - of South Yorkshire.

“My thoughts are with the victim’s family, and whilst I understand that nothing can undo the pain they have been through, I hope that this sentence offers them some closure”.
