Doncaster awarded £20m by Government for city centre regeneration
The funding was announced earlier this week
Doncaster has been awarded £20million by the government to transform the city centre.
Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, minister for devolution, faith and communities, visited Doncaster Markets on Thursday, November 27, 2025, to speak with traders alongside Mayor Ros Jones and Sally Jameson MP.
The funding was announced by Mayor Jones in the council chamber on Thursday afternoon.
She told councillors: “Today, we welcomed to Doncaster the minister for devolution, faith and communities to formally confirm the £20m Community Regeneration Partnership funding for Doncaster city centre, to create jobs and revamp the city centre.
“The £20 million package will go towards multiple projects including, £7m for the next phase of investment into Doncaster Markets; £5m to purchase key city centre sites including derelict buildings; £3m for heritage and culture; £5m to improve the city centre experience.”
The Mayor said regenerating the city centre was a “key priority” and that “Doncaster Markets will play a pivotal role in the vision to create a modern and thriving city centre”.
Fahnbulleh said in a statement it had been “wonderful to visit Doncaster” and added: “This funding will go to the heart of the community, where they need and want it most.”
Sally Jameson MP said: “Our city has tremendous potential, and this funding will help deliver locally identified and locally led projects.
“Doncaster Council and Mayor Ros Jones have worked tirelessly and consulted widely to identify these projects, which will make a real impact in our city.”
The Conservative group, whose leader Cllr Steve Cox recently called for Doncaster Markets to come back “in-house” at the council, said they would be watching how the money is spent closely.
Councillor Jane Cox, who represents Finningley, said: “We welcome the money to Doncaster. We hope it is spent wisely and benefits the hard working independent market traders and the residents of Doncaster.”
