Barnsley man jailed for 10 years after raping woman he'd offered lift home to
Sheffield Crown Court heard the victim was driven to a remote location to be attacked
A Barnsley man has been jailed for a decade after sexually assaulting a 19 year old woman he'd offered a life home to.
Mark Nicholls, 37, of Mallory Way, carried out the attack on April 14 last year, after seeing the victim walking in the Barnsley area.
Nicholls drove the victim to a remote location where he subjected her to a sexual assault and rape.
He then locked her inside the vehicle before eventually letting her go.
Nicholls was arrested in the days after the crime after the victim came forward to police. He was definitively linked to the scene after a button from her jeans was found inside his car.
The 37 year old denied allegations against him and was convicted of sexual assault, rape and false imprisonment at Sheffield Crown Court on January 15.
He was cleared of kidnap.
Yesterday (March 10) Nicholls was handed 10 years in prison at the same court.
Detective Constable Alice Gilbert, the officer in charge of the case for South Yorkshire Police, said:
“I applaud the victim’s courage and would like to thank her for her support in this investigation.
“She has demonstrated great strength in coming forward, providing evidence at court, and helping to bring Nicholls to justice.
“Nicholls showed no remorse throughout the trial, and I hope that yesterday's sentencing provides some closure and peace to the victim.
“His lengthy sentence means Nicholls will be off the streets of Barnsley and will not pose a risk to members of the public as they go about their daily lives in peace.”
