Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has officially approved the final plans for the construction of more than 200 homes on a former colliery site off Wakefield Road.

Originally outlined in 2018 by Gleeson Homes, the project includes the construction of 221 homes, complete with dedicated parking, public open spaces, and play areas.

The council’s planning board rubber stamped the scheme during their meeting today (October 22).

As part of the development agreement, Gleeson Homes will contribute £1.1 million towards primary and secondary school capacity, and provide 22 affordable homes. Additional funding includes £206,500 for off-site green spaces and £109,200 for heritage assets.

Two objections were submitted by local residents, who raised concerns over potential loss of light and views from neighboring properties, the distribution of affordable housing, and possible construction disruptions. One resident also suggested that wheelie bins should be stored in discreet locations.

In response to concerns around implications to the highway network in the area, planning officers told the meeting that the applicant had submitted traffic surveys at outline stage.

Councillor Ken Richardson, chair of the board, added that questions around traffic had been raised and answered at outline stage.

The plans were approved following a vote.
