Plaid Cymru leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth, is expected to say his party is ready to “replace Labour” and lead a “new government, with new energy and new ideas,” as members gather for the party’s annual conference in Swansea.

The conference comes eight months before next year’s Senedd election, and follows a recent poll which put Plaid Cymru ahead on 30%, with Reform UK on 29% and Labour on 14%.

Mr ap Iorwerth is expected to say:

“Today, with a historic nation-building opportunity before us, I’m going to set out the choice facing Wales – two very different futures but only one credible option.

"A seismic shift in our politics lies ahead. Change now seems inevitable and of course it’s long overdue.”

He will tell supporters Plaid Cymru is “not here to act as Labour’s conscience,” adding:

“We are not here to repair Labour. We are here to replace them."

We've asked Welsh Labour to respond to the comments made by Plaid Cymru.

The Plaid leader is also set to appeal to those who have never voted for the party before, saying:

"Life-long supporter and first-time voter. The time is now to forge new allegiances for a brighter future."

Previously speaking following the polls, Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan described the results as a "massive concern" and said the UK Government needed to support Welsh Labour.

The Conservatives, currently the main opposition in Cardiff Bay, are predicted to fall to fourth on 13% while the Liberal Democrats are on 7%.

Plaid Cymru's conference will see the party set out its programme for government ahead of the election in May 2026.
