A man from Neath has been sentenced after a campaign of mental, physical and sexual abuse against a single victim.

In an incident in February 2024, 33-year-old Nicholas Sowter, from Waunceirch, subjected his victim to verbal and physical abuse, leaving bruises on the victim’s body.

In April 2024, Sowter sent explicit images of the victim to the victim’s place of work. He later repeatedly contacted the same place of work to demand that the victim lost their job.

Sowter also displayed persistent coercive controlling behaviour, attempting to exert control over the victim’s relationship with friends.

Sowter has been sentenced to 16 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. He has been handed a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim for two years. He has also been ordered to pay compensation, victim surcharge and costs totalling £739.

Detective Inspector Jason Kingdom said: “Nicholas Sowter’s behaviour towards his victim was completely unacceptable.

“This was not a one-off occurrence; this was a pattern of behaviour with the goal of exerting control over every aspect of the victim’s life.

“At South Wales Police, we will not tolerate abuse of any kind. We hope that with this sentence, the victim can move on with their life free of worry of what Nicholas Sowter will do next.”
