Southampton has made it to the final four places in a competition to be named UK City of Culture 2025.

The locations approved by Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries are Southampton, Bradford, County Durham and Wrexham County Borough.

The finalists were whittled down from a record 20 initial bids.

Winning the competition is said to have a huge positive impact on an area by driving investment and creating jobs.

City of Culture head judge Sir Phil Redmond, said: "Culture can act as a catalyst for community engagement, civic cohesion and a driver for economic and social change.

We have had a great longlist to select from, which made the shortlisting difficult, but I am now looking forward to visiting each of the shortlisted places with the panel."

The winner will be announced in May.
