Police are trying to trace the owner of a severed finger after it was found outside a block of flats in Southampton.

Officers say it was found in a parking area in Lower Banister Street on Friday night behind a block of flats that fronts onto Bedford Place.

The man is believed to have lost the finger in an accident while trying to climb a fence after getting trapped in a courtyard area.

The man is believed to have been drinking prior to the incident and he wandered off after being given a towel by a resident, police said.

Officers are concerned for his welfare due to the trauma of what happen and as he appears to have lost a lot of blood.

Anyone who thinks they know the man is being urged to contact police on 101 and seek medical assistance for him.

Police said they also want to hear from anyone who saw where he went after the incident.
