The Royal Navy has completed it largest defence exercise in the Arctic since the Cold War.

The Portsmouth-based aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales led the naval fleet in the exercise known as Operation Cold Response.

This was the first time the carrier has been so far north.

They were joined by more than 27,000 personnel, warships and air power from more than 20 NATO allies.

The operation was designed to help forces experience a cold, harsh environment.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who visited personnel on the ground, said: "I congratulate all those personnel who have achieved so much in the Arctic over recent weeks.

"I can testify to the challenging conditions and their utmost professionalism and good humour in maintaining operations throughout."
