Poor quality bricks are believed to be the cause of a house collapse in Portsmouth.

Two people were taken to hospital when the terraced home in Langford Road in Buckland was reduced to rubble on 7 December.

City council engineers suspect substandard bricks caused the failure of below ground level walls.

Ian Maguire, assistant director of regeneration at Portsmouth City Council, said: "Following the collapse of the private residences at 23 and 25 Langford Road, the council's building control team suspect the cause is likely to be the failure of sub-floor walls due to the poor quality of the bricks originally used to build the below ground level walls, together with the damp conditions and inadequate foundations.

"It is expected that this would only affect a limited number of properties.

"The insurance companies will be confirming the definitive cause of the collapse."
