From a boogie on the dancefloor to dancing in the kitchen — the site of a former Isle of Wight nightclub is in for a markedly different lease of life.

While Zanies Nightclub on Sandown Esplanade may be no more, the site could become home to five three-bed townhouses.

The plans were approved in 2017 but nothing has happened since so the plans have been re-submitted to gain planning permission again.

Before the two applications though, the once popular nightclub near Sandown Pier, had been knocked down due to its deteriorating and derelict condition.

The site has been empty ever since and currently sits as a gap between the multi-storey residential blocks.

Permission to demolish the nightclub and instead build six houses was also approved in 2003 and then renewed in 2006, but apart from pulling the club down no other work started.

Now, J. And P. Moorman are submitting the same plans to the Isle of Wight Council as 2017 and is viewed as an opportunity to aid the regeneration of Sandown seafront, according to planning agent Andrew White.

The current temporary security fencing, the agent says, is having a negative impact on the townscape.

They say the important views along the Esplanade will be protected and enhanced by the construction of the modern townhouses.
