Murder investigation launched after man dies in Chichester assault
A 57-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene
A murder investigation has been launched following an assault outside a Chichester pub.
Sussex Police were called to The Dolphin and Anchor in West Street at around 11pm on Thursday.
A 57-year-old man from South Yorkshire sustained serious head injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
A 30-year-old man from Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and a 42-year-old man from County Durham has been detained on suspicion of affray.
Both remain in police custody.
Detectives say they have also identified a third man suspected of affray, and are looking to locate him.
Sussex Police say a section of Chichester city centre will remain cordoned off, and that there will be an increased police presence as enquiries continue.
Detective Chief Inspector Suzanne Joseph, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said:
"This incident led to the tragic death of a 57-year-old man, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
"It happened in a busy pub in the city centre, and we’re urging anyone with information to come forward as we seek to establish the exact circumstances."
Anyone who witnessed what happened, or has mobile or CCTV footage, is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101, quoting Operation Arunside.
People can also report anonymously by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or on their website.
