Police investigating a series of suspicious fires on cars and vans in and around Wimborne have arrested a man on suspicion of arson.

13 vehicles and two properties were affected by the blazes in Broadstone, Wimborne and Merley, which were reported between 1am and 3am on Monday (May 15th).

Officers are currently questioning a man in his 40s, from the local area.

Dorset Police Chief Inspector Andy Edwards said a 'detailed investigation' has been carried out by officers.

“We fully understand the impact of these incidents on the victims, but also within the wider communities of Broadstone, Wimborne and Merley.

“I want to take this opportunity to reassure residents that officers from our neighbourhood policing teams will continue to carry out enhanced patrols in the area and can be approached by members of the public with any information or concerns.

“Also, I would like to renew our appeal for any witnesses to any of the incidents or anyone who might have seen suspicious activity in the roads mentioned to please come forward."

Cars and vans were left burnt out by the fires in the early hours of Monday morning

One of those affected was 25-year-old hairdresser Chloe Torring from Wimborne, who told us:

"I was woken up by my neighbour ringing my doorbell to tell me my car is on fire.

"I was in complete shock and disbelief."

Ms Torring added she was "gutted" as she had owned the car for only five months.

"It's heart-wrenching to think someone would do such a horrible thing, for no good reason," she said.

"My car is completely destroyed. The engine is on the floor, I have no front half of my car - there's just charcoal inside."

Those living nearby who may have CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage of the incidents are being asked to check their cameras to see if they have any relevant video of what happened.
